Brownie Healthy Snacks!

World of Girls Journey --

The girls decided to "change the story" of their peers eating unhealthy snacks. They made recipe cards of the healthy snacks they've made during Girl Scout meetings and passed them out at school. Here the Brownie taste tested and approved healthy snacks.

Thai Lettuce Wraps

Lettuce Leaves
Rice
Carrots
Celery
Hoison Sauce

Chop the celery. Grate the carrots. Cook rice. Spread one teaspoonful of hoison sauce around on a lettuce leaf. Add one large serving spoonful of rice on top of sauce. Sprinkle grated carrots and chopped celery on the rice. Wrap lettuce leaf around rice and vegetables.

Hummus

1 15 oz can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup tahini (sesame paste)
6 tablespoons lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, minced (1 teaspoon jarred garlic)
1 teaspoon salt

Puree all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Add a little water if hummus is too thick.
Serve with pita chips and carrot sticks.

Black Bean Dip

One 15 ounce can black beans, rinsed and drained
6 tablespoons salsa
1 ½ tablespoons lime juice
1 clove garlic, minced

Puree all ingredients in a food processor until smooth.
Serve with tortilla chips.

Trail Mix

Dry cereal such as Rice Chex or Cheerios
Mini pretzels or pretzel sticks
Dried cranberries or raisins
M&Ms

Add 1 cup dry cereal, ½ cup pretzels, 1/3 cup dried fruit, and ¼ cup M&Ms to small plastic bag. Close top of bag and shake gently to mix.

Girl Scouts Rock the Mall Sing Along

On Saturday, June 9th, 200,000 girls and adults from around the world are expected to come together on June 9, 2012 for the world's largest Sing-Along. The pre-show is from 9-noon and the main event is from 12-4.

A video of the theme song IGNITE can be found here, as well as a list of the 50 top Girl Scout songs that will be sung. I don't know half of them, but we've begun teaching the girls as many as we know!

Cookies, cookies, and more cookies

The wall of cookies in my dining room.

Our first cookie booth at Crate and Barrel up on Mass Ave., NW. It was a success -- 80 plus boxes sold on a slow Sunday afternoon. Who can turn down 6 year old girls in uniform?

World Thinking Day 2012

I think everyone who attended World Thinking Day yesterday had a really good time. Our troop had chosen Norway for our country so for the last couple of meetings we did all sorts of activities related to Norwegian culture.

The first week, after finding Norway in an atlas we talked a bit about its climate and what sort of animals live there. We passed around some Norwegian sweaters and jewelry and looked at a traditional dress. The girls then learned how to finger knit, made little woven heart decorations and had a snack of open-faced sandwiches.

During the second meeting we listened to some traditional Hardanger fiddle music and learned a little dance. The girls drew tons of pictures of gnomes, animals and flags for our display. And for our snack, the girls made krumkake, a cookie baked on a flat iron and then rolled into cones.

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers, particularly Kari, Jenn, Amy, Josie and Keira for helping out with the event.

Girl Scouts 100 Birthday

Girl Scouts will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2012. Mark your calendars for a sing along on the National Mall on June 9, 2012. 200,000 Girls Scouts, friends and family will travel to Washington, DC from around the world. I think our troop may have the shortest trip to make in order to participate in the event!
